Well, I guess it depends on where you live, but here in Maryland, I think we can tell spring is right around the corner.  We already have several camping trips planned and it’s time to get our cast iron cookware out of the rendezvous trailer and make sure it’s ready to go.  We hope you have lots of fun outings planned with the family and that you take along your cast iron pots and pans.  Yeah, they are a bit on the heavy side, but they are essentially indestructible and if you’re not back packing, it’s really not much effort to throw a couple skillets and a dutch oven in the trunk.

If your cast iron cookware has been stored for any length of time, you need to make sure it doesn’t have any rust on it before you head out to the woods.  Check it real good and remove any rust by scouring it with steel wool or even an SOS pad (steel wool with a detergent in it).  Of course, after removing the rust you should re-season the pan, but that’s real simple.  Check out our previous blogs:

Feel free to send us an e-mail with your camping experiences, and especially your cast iron cookware recipes, and we’ll be glad to post them.
